Technology back then was so limited on the NES (the original game's platform) that drawing a mouth and a realistic hair was too difficult, So Nintendo's developers made Mario wear a cap and have a mustache.

 

Luigi colors were because of communism

During the rise of the Soviet Union, Nintendo considered changing Mario’s colors from red to green in fear of looking like a Communism supporters. The idea of Green Mario was later used to create Luigi.

 

Mushroom Power-Ups are real

The mushroom power-ups Mario eats are based off of "Amanita muscaria". These are hallucinogenic mushrooms that distort the size of perceived objects.

 

You’ve been killing people for coins and fun!

According to the Super Mario Bros. instruction book, when the Koopas invaded the Mushroom Kingdom, they turned its people into the blocks you see and destroy through all the levels.

 

Super Mario Bros. size is 32KB

The game was released on a 256-kilobit cartridge, which translates to 32 kilobytes. To put that in perspective, it would take around three Super Mario Bros. cartridges to store a very low resolution JPEG image.

Glitch

As long as Mario is descending when he hits an enemy from "below," he will bounce off the enemy rather than taking a hit.

 

Game Over

If you get more than 128 lives in the game using the infinite-lives trick, you'll get an automatic "Game Over" the next time you die, thanks to a buffer overflow error.
